Petroleum pipeline monitoring
A pipeline was built to continuously pump various grades of petrol between
Sydney and Newcastle. Various grades of petrol were pumped along
the same pip. The monitoring involved for this pipeline was two fold.
For the length of the pipeline, fluid pressure was monitored.
If a leak occurred, detected via a pressure drop, a rough
approximation of the location of the leak was calculated
points leading into the Newcastle end was monitored to
determine the grade of petrol.
This allowed the determined the point of time at which the current
fluid in the pipe was switched between the various holding tanks.
