A simple gas level monitoring system was installed such that when a specific level of gas leakage was detected in the air an alarm was sounded. Once a much higher level of gas leakage was detected a water dousing mechanism was initiated and the area was flooded. This was to prevent sparks of any sort occurring.
Calibrating the systems in-house was fairly simple but the installed system was outside. Trying to ensure a full area coverage in varying wind conditions and direction is what made this project a challenge.
The system was successfully implemented. To the best of our knowledge there have been no explosions at this plant related to the LPG tanks.
