A manufacturing plant of Colgate-Palmolive had a few rather large LPG tanks installed on the side of the plant. A system was needed to ensure that the risk of an explosion was minimized. This was achieved by building a metal cage around the cyliders and then adding a high pressure water system connected to a fire alarm systems that could throughly drench the are in and around the gas cylinders. In the event of a fire this was then a good system. In the event of leaks it essentially failed.
So a simple gas level monitoring system was intalled suck that at specific level of gas leakage detected in the air an alarm was sounded. At a much higher level of gas leakage in the area the water dousing mechanism was initiated.
Calibrating the systems was farily simple but this system was outside. rying to ensure a full coverage in varying wind directions is what made this project a challenge .
The system was successfully. To the best of our knowledge there have been no explosions at this plant related to the LPG tanks.
